Onion Salad 'Puzzle'

- 2 bulb onions
- 10 plums
- 2 Tbsp crushed pistachio nuts
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 3 Tbsp chopped dill and parsley
- salt and pepper to taste

Finely grate the onion, pit the plums and mash them. Grind the pistachios (or any other nuts) . Stir all the ingredients together, and add salt and pepper to taste. Sprinkle the herbs over the top.

3 Brothers Onions : onion remedy

Toby left the cafe with a basket full of cabbages and spotted three boys: one was small and black, the second was a little bigger, and wore a ginger-coloured costume decorated with green bands. The third was the biggest, and had on bronze armour. He was carrying a spring onion.

‘Black Onion Seed, Onion Set and Bulb Onion,' they said, bowing to the boy. ‘We're all brothers. Lady Pumpkin sent us to protect you.'

‘From who?' Toby said in surprise.

‘From microbes and illnesses,' the onions replied proudly.

‘I wish I could have protected my mum from illness,' the boy sighed.

‘In order to protect someone, you need to take care of them,' Black Onion Seed told the boy. ‘For example, I am simply an onion seed, but without me, Onion Set would not grow. They plant me in a vegetable patch, and I get to work growing a golden suit with green bands for him straight away.'

‘And I look after my older brother, Bulb Onion,' Onion Set explained. ‘When I am planted in the earth, I grow a bulb with lots of juicy scales, bronze armour and firm feathers for him.'

‘Everything my brothers give me, I give out to people,' Bulb Onion said proudly. ‘In every scale, I have thousands of brave, flying phytoncide-soldiers. They chase all the microbes away. If I stay beside you, no harmful microbes will touch you.'

‘But you have such a sharp taste, Bulb Onion. My eyes and nose always tingle when mum chops you,' Toby said.

‘The air is always full of harmful microbes, and people are always covered in them. I have to release my phytoncide-soldiers to attack straight away,' Bulb Onion explained. ‘If you want to get rid of my sharp taste, hold me in water for a few minutes before chopping me up.'

‘It's nice to see three brothers who are such good friends,' Toby said in admiration.

‘We three brothers are in Bulb Onion's family. There are forty brothers in the whole onion family, and they're all friends.' Bulb Onion laughed.

‘What a huge family!' the boy exclaimed. ‘Tell me about your brothers.'

‘Many of our relatives grow in the wild, and people haven't yet tamed them. But we'll tell you a story about the most remarkable members of our family,' the onion brothers said.

A woman went to the market to buy some onions, but she simply could not decide which onion was the best. In the end, she bought all the different types of onion which were on sale.
